Androstenedione (aka “Andro”) is an androgen, the formation of which occurs in the adrenal cortex and gonads (ovaries and testes). The level of synthesis in the adrenal cortex is controlled by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). Androstenedione is involved in puberty, and responsible for the development of secondary male sexual characteristics. It is a precursor of testosterone and estradiol, but its androgenic effect is much weaker than other androgens (primarily testosterone).
Since Androstenedione is directly converted by the liver into testosterone, it leads to increase in testosterone levels. As a result high level of testosterone causes an increase of energy, strength, and athletic performance.
How to take Androstenedione
Androstenedione should be taken at the dosage of 100 mg supplement approximately 45 minutes before training. Testosterone levels seem to peak about 60 minutes after taking an oral dose. The other scheme is 50mg about 30 – 60 minutes before training and another 50 mg about one hour after it.
Side effects
Since Androstenedione increases the levels of testosterone, the overdose causes testosterone related side effects like acne and an increased libido. The side-effects also include decrease in HDL (good) cholesterol and prostrate hypertrophy.
Androstenedione is not recommended for women.
